Ragdoll Cats

MITZ

After we Fostered Alfie and he left for his new home, We were only to glad to be able to Help with the Fostering of another Ragdoll Cat, For Helen and Darren from UKRCC.

This time though, Mitz will not be rehomed and will stay with us for the rest of his life. He has only been here a few weeks and already he is one of the family and we love him as much as the others.

Here is the story so far:-

Mitzja, coming into life time care with the UKRCC

Mitzja (prounounced 'Mitssa') is a four year old Male Ragdoll. He has mild brain damage, which his vet feels is as a result of an infection he contracted while still in his Mum's womb and so he needs a high level of care. Mitzja also has a severe spraying problem, which is owner has managed for the past three years, by adapting her home and garden, to accomodate Mitzja. However recently the other cats in the home have started to toilet inappropriately.

I have spoken at great length with Mitjza's owner, to establish his problems and his needs. Between us we feel Mitzja would be better living as a stud cat companion, in a purpose built pen situation. Mitja is gentle, loving and enjoys the company of other cats.

Mitzja's owner feels great sadness that she has to let him go, but feels it is fairer to him and her other cats, as coping with him is becoming more and more difficult.

Mitzja is to be FIV/FeLV tested while still with his owner and once we have the reuslts of these tests, he is coming into the care of the UKRCC, for life. He is going to live with Gail and Hannah and will eventually become companion to their stud boy, sharing his luxurous quarters. Gail is totally commited to giving this little man a home for life and we at the UKRCC will give our support and a life long commitment to him, funding all his veterinary care, vaccinations etc. etc. from our charity funds.

I spoke with Mitz's owner yesterday evening and she feels very reassured, having spoken to Gail, that her Raggie will receive the very best of love and care. We shall be taking Mitz to Gail on 9th February.

  • On Saturday 9th february, we took Mitz to his long term foster home. It was an emotional handover, perhaps the most difficult we have had to do, as Mitz's owner could not have loved him more and letting him go was clearly so painful for her. She did it for Mitz's welfare and happiness and we admired her selflessness so much. Mitz was clearly so bonded with his Mum and taking him away from her was a hard thing to do. cr(

Mitz had a very long journey of 147 miles, which took two and half hours, but he settled down in his carrier and coped very well with the journey, just chatting to us gently, from time to time. We arrived at Gail and Hannah's and Mitz was introuduced to his new accomodation, a large pen and sleeping quarters insulated and heated. He decided at this point, having been taken from his Mum and after tolerating a long journey that he needed some time to himself, so Mitz found a quite, dark corner and hid himself away. When we left he was still there! :(

I spoke with Gail later that evening and at this time, despite gentle coaxing and the offer of freshly cooked fish, Mitz was still in his hiding place. At 10.02pm we had the email we had been waiting for....it simply said "He's out! I just went back out after another long hour of talks and he was there waiting for me." We were so relieved that he had decided to leave his dark corner and start to trust Gail and we certainly rested easier on Saturday night.

Since then, Mitz has gained in confidence day by day, is settling well and is bonding with Gail and Hannah. It is planned that he will in time become a life long companion to Rupert, one of Gail's Ragdolls.

Heart felt thanks to Gail for giving this special boy a safe and loving home.

Mitz, snuggled down in his whicker bed, which he brought with him to Gail's because he loves it so much.

You might spot his shaved side - Mitz's owner had him dematted before he came into our care, so his coat is short on his sides for now, but will soon grow back :) )
